Psalm 130

Following suit with 2023 looking at Psalm 46 and Martin Luther's hymn "A Mighty Fortress is our God", Psalm 130 was the inspiration of another of Martin Luther's hymns, "By Grace Alone." Although Psalm 130 is comforting and instructive to Christians, verse 1 is the place of every person at some point in life, "Out of the depths..." The depths is none other than the sin that resides within every person. The Psalmist cries out to the only One who can provide mercy and grace which leads to forgiveness. The Psalmist does not suppress his sin or attempt to hide it, but brings it forth before a Holy God who knows every sin every committed against Him and His righteous law. The Psalmist sees his sin against God's holy law and it brings forth a sorrow that leads to confession. The Psalmist longs for the forgiveness of God and seeks it with all his heart. Martin Luther, the 16th century German Monk who began the Protestant Reformation on October 31, 1517, saw that after conversion he was always in need of the mercy of God for he still sinned. This is true of every Christian before and after him. We are always in need of the mercy and grace of God and He is so kind to freely bestow it upon His people.
