Passion Week begins at Palm Sunday (also known as the Trimphal Entry in Matthew 21, Luke 19, and John 12). Palm Sunday is known for the palm branches that were laid on the road before Jesus entered into Jerusalem and for the donkey in which Jesus rode. However, there is great significance for the long expected king and for us today. Jesus is a king unlike any other for a plethora of reasons, but the prophet Zechariah fixes his gaze upon three which are, the king being righteous, the king having and dispensing salvation, and his humility. What king has said of himself that someone prophesied his arrival? Or, what king has said of himself to be righteous? Earthly kings are consumed with themselves which Yahweh warned Israel about in wanting a king. Jesus is very different in that He came to serve rather than to be served although He has every right to have the entirety of man (and all creation) bow down and do His bidding. The first coming of Christ the King is marked in humility. This is a humility of great affliction and pain, namely because many in the crowd chanted His praise because of the miracles they had seen (Luke 19:37) and not because they loved God with all their heart (Deuteronomy 6:5). Yet, with Jesus already fulfilling this prophecy, He is still endowed with salvation. The question is, are you ready to give your life to Him, surrender all, and receive the greatest gift ever afforded?
