Can't Live Without It

Paul continues his opening remarks in a general way regarding the armor of God. He tells us something that may seem obvious, but something we neglect which is putting the armor of God on. We would tell our children to put a raincoat on in a rain storm or a winter jacket on in the cold. God is telling us, His people, to put the armor on that He has so graciously provided for us. And how often we fail to do so. The promises of verse 11 are further indication that we need this armor. We are powerless to fight the devil on our own (consider how easy Adam and Eve fell). Therefore, we don't take the armor of God upon ourself as a last ditch effort, but as the first order of business. In wanting to follow Christ faithfully, we must put on this divinely given armor. In fact, if we don't put it on, we, literally, can't live without it.
