Paul moves his attention to the issue of slaves and masters. In every case from Ephesians 5:21-6:9, Paul is imploring his audience to look to Christ in this life. The same is true for slaves and masters. Although slaves and masters looked different in Paul's day compared to ours, regardless of where we find ourselves, we are to look to Christ as the One to whom we are working, serving, etc. In this case, slaves and masters, although not a direct parallel, can be applied to the employee/employer relationship as well as children to their parents. The question is not so much 'why did Paul not condone slavery?' Which he does elsewhere. Rather the question is, 'wherever one finds himself today are you doing your work and living your life so that Christ may be pleased with you?' This question applies in every sphere of life including the vocation God has called each person to.
