Paul moves in his exhortation of the family unit to fathers. Commentators are divided as to whether fathers means dads or mom and dad, however, the father does play a role as head of the wife (Ephesians 5:23) and he carries this out in front of his children by leading them all in worship of the King of kings. The father is by no means a dictator. He is a loving man who disciplines and instructs his children so that they would see more of Christ in their lives. A father does not stop at mere obedience from his children, but he goes further to see his children (whom God gave him) love the Lord with all their heart, soul, and mind (Deuteronomy 6). Therefore, in this effort, the father is to not intentionally bring his children to anger through any means of which could be neglect, unrealistic expectations, failure to love, etc. Fathers who are Christ centered are gentle and affectionate toward their children of whom they steward their soul toward Christ.
